And I Quote...

Poetry has lured and inspired people across the globe, whatever be the language. I, however, am rather inept in understanding anything beyond simple poetry. Flowery language has not been my forte either to use or to comprehend- a limitation indeed. On the other hand, what inspires me are quotes and ironically, some of my favourites are translations or excerpts from poems!

I am presenting some of my favourite quotes for you in the hope that they will work wonders for you as they did and continue to do for me! Most of my questions find their answers in quotes of Osho, Sadhguru, Kahlil Gibran and Rumi. I will try not to include too many of them as I use them in most of my blogs; only those I just cannot resist!

I have also included pictures of all the great people whom I have quoted here; who have had such lovely nuggets to impart.

We have to start with Love!

“You may not be his first, his last, or his only. He loved before he may love again. But if he loves you now, what else matters? He's not perfect—you aren't either, and the two of you may never be perfect together but if he can make you laugh, cause you to think twice, and admit to being human and making mistakes, hold onto him and give him the most you can. He may not be thinking about you every second of the day, but he will give you a part of him that he knows you can break—his heart. So don't hurt him, don't change him, don't analyze and don't expect more than he can give. Smile when he makes you happy, let him know when he makes you mad, and miss him when he is not there” – Bob Marley

“People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that's what everyone wants. But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that is holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life.

A true soul mate is probably the most important person you'll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then leave.

A soul mates purpose is to shake you up, tear apart your ego a little bit, show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light can get in, make you so desperate and out of control that you have to transform your life, then introduce you to your spiritual master...” -
    Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love

I choose to love you in silence…
For in silence I find no rejection
I choose to love you in loneliness…
For in loneliness no one owns you but me
I choose to adore you from a distance…
For distance will shield me from pain
I choose to kiss you in the wind…
For the wind is gentler than my lips
I choose to hold you in my dreams…
For in my dreams, you have no end- Rumi

The internet is replete with quotes on love but the three quotes given above reached me without my looking for it and they touched me and remained with me which is saying something for I have a forgettable memory!!

The next lot of quotes is on life.

“It is the time you have invested for your rose that makes your rose so important.”
“The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched,, they are felt with the heart.”
“You become responsible forever for what you’ve tamed.”
“Only children know what they are looking for.”
“One runs the risk of weeping a little if one lets oneself be tamed.”
“No one is ever satisfied where he is”
The above pearls of wisdom are from the “Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

“Don’t be satisfied with stories, how things have gone with others. Unfold your own myth.”
“Know that one day, your pain will become your cure.”
“Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray.”
“If you are irritated by every rub, how will you be polished?”
“What you seek is seeking you.”
“Everyone has been made for some particular work and the desire for that work has been put in every heart.”

The above are treasures from the collection of quotes by Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, also known as Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi or more popularly as Rumi. His words have the power to stir your soul!

A few favourites from the Dalai Lama…
“Follow three Rs- Respect for self, Respect for others and Responsibility for all your actions.”
“Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.”
“Don’t let a little dispute injure a great relationship.”
“Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.”
“In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.”
“Share your knowledge. It is a way to achieve immortality.”
“Every year go to someplace you’ve never been before.”
“Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.”
“Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.”

Heartwarming quotes to melt your heart…
“No act of kindness, no matter how small is wasted”- Aesop
“A person’s a person no matter how small.”- Dr, Seuss

“If you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”- Roald Dahl, The Twits

“Why did you do all this for me?” he asked. “I don’t deserve it. I have never done anything for you.” “You have been my friend” replied Charlotte. “That in itself is a tremendous thing.”- EB White, Charlotte’s Web

Sometimes” said Pooh “the smallest things take the most room in your heart.”
Piglet: “How do you spell love?” Pooh: “You don’t spell it, you feel it.”- AA Milne, Winnie the Pooh

A few quotes on friendship/love/marriage/life- hard truth from another deep thinker and philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche...
“It is not a lack of love but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.”
“Love is blind; Friendship closes its eyes.”
“We often refuse to accept an idea merely because the tone of voice in which it has been expressed is unsympathetic to us.” (I am guilty)
“All truth is simple…is that not doubly a lie?”
“The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently.”
“What do you regard as most humane? To spare someone shame.” (So true!)

Last but not the least, some funny quotes albeit true to an extent…
“When he is late for dinner and I know he must be either having an affair or lying dead on the street, I always hope he is dead.”-Judith Viorst (I have used this before…was in splits when I read it and liked it immensely!!)
“Love is the same as like except you feel a lot sexier.”-Judith Viorst
“I could be such a wonderful wife to another wife’s husband.”-Judith Viorst (I love her for her observation!)
“Nobody who knows me and loves me dearly would call me adaptable or flexible. I’m not. –Judith Viorst (I can see my dear ones smiling in agreement about a certain someone!!)

There are as many quotes as there are stars in the sky and I know every time I look at this I’d think of so many more that should have been here instead but…I realize I have already exceeded my own intended word limit but I always get carried away. I really enjoyed compiling these for you and I do hope you’ll relish them! There are a lot many deep and true quotes which I have deliberately left out as they don’t sound too happy and border on the painfully true and negative- we all know that side of life exists but I wanted to pick feel good quotes for you to hope and be happy.
