Are We So Jobless?

My question to everyone out there who is ready to share an opinion, mostly negative, on everything that doesn’t concern them: Are you so jobless? I really need to know this. Do you get paid for it? This is not a sarcastic question but a genuine one!

The word ‘troll’ infuriates me and it is such a common term these days. Just when we had enough of the word awesome (spelt in every other way except the correct one and spoken with varied intonation), here comes another one. My thirteen year old uses it so often and as I roll up my eyes for the umpteenth time, I wonder how to control myself lest I end up with those “rolly” eyes on stickers of animals or cartoon characters!

I need to know why there is a need to bring down Ekta Kapoor (producer and director of soaps and movies) for her dress sense, Priyanka Chopra (film actor) for her relationship with Nick Jonas (singer), Deepika Padukone (actor) for looking dark, Chloe Moretz (actor and model) for excess weight, Kareena Kapoor (actor) for the lack of weight (and this is a very limited list); basically, anyone who has done something (good enough to be enjoying the limelight) is target for the silliest of reasons! If it is about their profession I can accept it- you pay for a ticket to their show but it was lousy and you decided not to forgive so you vent out your frustration. Accepted! Who are you though to comment on their dress sense, their colour, make up, bodies or their personal life in such a negative way? How does their personal life or personal choices affect you?

People actually believe if a person has a celebrity status, he/she is public property to be misused (as people in India, at least, use public property lesser than they misuse it). They are self appointed judges on their character, their relationships…Do you really have so much precious time to waste? Is the kick, of spreading negativity, so great that you can use the filthiest language to tear someone apart, without a second thought about the person’s feelings/ struggles?

Increasing number of celebrity stars die of drug overdose or other forms of suicide. The pressure on them to look good, behave appropriately is phenomenal. It is not humanly possible for them (or us) to please everybody. Just because they enjoy fame and money (which is a result of their hard work and talent), you cannot be nasty to them! Does it make you feel like a better person if you bring someone down? If it does, you do need medical help.

I get these news pop ups and it took me a while to realize, if you open one news tidbit then you get bombarded by the same type of news. When the Blue Whale game was rampant, I’d get news everyday and I was under the impression that everyone is going to die, till my husband asked me how only I got such news. Sure enough, when I stopped looking at the news for a week, blue whale disappeared and the world was saved from doom!!!

Out of curiosity, on one jobless afternoon, (See! I told you! You have to be jobless even to read it) I opened up some news on someone who was trolled and after that I felt this Universe was full of nothing but trolls. Despite my gut feeling stopping me, I went a step further to investigate as to what people really wrote and I curse myself for it. Such filth and senseless garbage! These people who write in English on a computer have to be educated people. Don’t you get the feeling that their poor parents have toiled to educate them in vain?

When a person is far away from us and possibly someone we will never meet, I guess the person stops being a real person for us. He/she becomes an object. We become insensitive and say rotten things for a good laugh (do we really get such a good laugh, I wonder) and perhaps popularity by being shocking. And what is that person’s fault? He/she is doing his/her bit to entertain us or work towards the improvement of the society. They are on a pedestal because they connected with the masses. We put them there. Do they really need to be targeted so mercilessly? Their private life is personal and private for them; they have feelings too- has that never occurred to us, who just fire away from the comforts of our own home?

Our day to day to lives, without being in the public eye, gives us enough stress; so take a moment to think of the pressure on them at every single moment to act perfect, be perfect. Next time we decide to write something let it be positive and if it is absolutely essential to criticize then let us be dignified in our censure.

  4. So true. People do react unnecessarily and feel their right in writing nonsense for everything. Even I find this extremely irksome. It is not necessary to give words to the dumd thoughts in ones mind. That way a lot of trash can be avoided from spilling over.

    1. You said it! Every thought need not and must not be put into words and definitely not shared, if it does no good to anyone.

  7. Yes I agree with you in whatever has been said and written. But i want to put across the point that as we don't have any right to judge or say negative as they have earned the game by hard work. But at the same time they also need to accept when they do something wrong or say something and face the consequences as any other citizen. But at that time they remember that they are celebs and need to be given that due.
    So that's also hypocrisy. ........

  8. What you say is true Shyam that celebs have a responsibility since they are public figures but their personal relationships, dress, colour, weight is nobody else's concern and to troll them in such a pathetic way is sad. I do agree with the hypocrisy bit though.
