First thoughts of 2018- Here and now!

Happy New Year! I had intended to write on the first day of the New Year so that I’d keep blogging all through the year but it wasn’t meant to be…

Nine days into 2018 and nothing spectacular has happened except the only miracle we seem so oblivious of- Life! Okay, we did celebrate two decades of being a couple day before yesterday in a special sort of way. He went to work even on a Sunday and I was teaching my daughter History till past our dinner time…

Today is the first day in a long long while, where I have got solitude and good health together and here I am typing with great fervor not knowing where this is leading! I have been trying hard and consciously to live in the present and being aware of it- from moment to moment. It is liberating when I am successful.

How our mind works is a wonder! Effortlessly, it takes us to our doom as we get engrossed in the myriad pictures and memories it conjures up and entices us with, keeping us wrapped in emotional turmoil. We seem to make a habit of it whether the thoughts are happy ones or not. Awareness of it and a determined effort to remain here and now immediately stops all negative processes like fear, anxiety and sorrow.

Over-thinking has helped nobody but what if I told you that even thinking is not altogether helpful? You’d throw a fit, right? I was horrified when I first heard this. I thrive on thought- after all, what are writers if we don’t think? Actually, thinking is good if it focuses on something specific-we do need a good amount of it in a number of careers. So, when is it bad? It turns against us when all we know is thinking. Sad, but true!

I used to be proud, till recently, that my mind could wander to a million places and scenarios while I chopped vegetables or carried out mundane chores. The great thinker that I thought I was- such a misnomer. The fact is that thinking in order to solve a real problem (not an imaginary one or an expected one) which is on your head is fine but to dwell in the past or dream of the future or solve problems that aren’t really there but you feel might crop up are not signs of being smart but a sign that you are missing life. You see the present only in past tense or a “could-be” present tense= future tense!!

It is great to have memories or learn from the past; it is great to have a basic short term plan and a long term plan but to dwell in it over and over is a bad idea. It ought not to take up so much of your real time existence. Always be aware that the reality is here and now- everything else is imaginary!

I have made a conscious effort in the past few weeks to stay in the moment and my mind wreaks havoc! I have been talking to myself for years now- perhaps all my life- living situations in my head. It has become so bad now that I have conversations with people in my head wherein in reality I haven’t, though I believe I have , for obvious reasons and I am shocked when I am told I have missed a birthday or haven’t called back.

This New Year, do give it a try. You will love it. It is so tricky but when you manage it; get the mind back every time it runs away, it is so beautiful. You are alert and observant. All you have to do is realize the inevitability of here and now and gone are your woes. You realize there is nothing you can do about things in the past and you just set out to do things you can fix here and now. The future is a million could be situations- you may or may not live to see them but why give up your NOW for anything. Believe me, my anger and anxiety is down by 100%. Knee jerk reactions are there- nearly 44 years of training on that-but I almost immediately get my poise back. The minute I find despondency set in I tap myself and bring myself to HERE and NOW and WOW!! Everything gets fixed and a smile firmly in place! Let’s all live our miraculous lives with gratitude and by being mindful, aware, alert and present…and all its synonyms!!!
